Ground has been broken on Sora Community Services’ new refuge for women and children escaping domestic and family violence.
This model includes self-contained accommodation units (“cluster”) located near communal facilities (“core”), offering a safe environment and access to counselling, legal assistance, education, employment support and child-friendly spaces. It allows families to receive support while maintaining personal space and routines.
The project is a collaboration between Sora Community Services, Housing Plus, NSW Government and a generous donor who has provided the land where it will be located.
Sora Community Services CEO, Belinda Kotris said this is a momentous occasion for safety in our community.
“The Core and Cluster will drastically increase the crisis accommodation capacity in Tamworth and provide essential wraparound services. Increasing capacity will improve the safety of women and children experiencing domestic and family violence.”

With 8 self-contained units, the project lays the foundation for long-term infrastructure growth which will support our community. Sora will retain its existing Women’s and Children’s Refuge and multiple residences used as transitional housing.
The project is expected to be completed and operational in early 2027.
